When I first thought of California, I expected beaches and palm trees, but Happy Valley is much different than that. The campground here is surrounded by redwoods, as many of you know, and because of the beautifully elegant trees, the hiking here is pretty amazing. My favorite trail so far has been to The Top of the World. The most popular way to get there is first by cutting through the high ropes course and then following a VERY steep pathway up to about 390 ft.

Since we were having such great experiences with the hiking we had done, Clayton, Karli, Angie and I decided to go on an adventure. We woke up one morning at 5:00 a.m. to travel to The Top of the World and watch the sunrise. Although it was an early morning, we walked in the dark (partially terrified and partially energetic) to view the glorious site. We took flashlights and our humor with us to avoid all the “mountain lions” that stroll across Happy Valley’s premises and complained about things like “My legs hurt!” or “My bed is calling my name right now!”. But, when we got to the top, we were pumped and ready to view the beautiful sunrise that we had hiked oh so early for… WHICH DIDN’T HAPPEN.

After our thirty minute hike, we found that we were facing south. And as many of you have probably discovered, it is quite foggy here in the mornings…. Not quite what we were expecting.

This was our view of the sunrise at The Top of the World!

Even though that one trip to The Top of the World may have not turned out as planned, we found it really funny. And when we returned, we finished the trip with one of our favorite things… SLEEP!
